clueless,

Welcome to Treasure Net !!

I've heard that testing for platinum can be done by putting the object in hydrogen peroxide. Platinum acts as a catalyst which reacts with the hydrogen peroxide releasing oxygen. If it bubbles, it MAY BE platinum.
However, the test in hydrogen peroxide is not a conclusive test as it also reacts with items; silver, for one.
Don.......

Not sure but very cool find.

Don..

i see.. still i don't see any reason why i shouldnt try your suggestion. anyway we're planning to go to a jeweler to test its authenticity. Thanks again Don!

If it was mine .I would heat it with a cutting torch. Plat. melts at 3214.9 degrees. You can't get a torch that hot. Plat will get White hot ,but won't melt. If it melts it's not Plat.

thanks for that suggestion, ron! we might consider that test as well.

This is very interesting at first I saw USSR and then the hammer and sickle, let us know what it is.

If the density of Pt is 21.45 g/cc, and we take the size of a hershey bar to be 7 cm X 16 cm x 1cm thick, we would have a volume of 112cc. So 112cc X 21.45 g/cc would be 2,397 grams of platinum.

I guess that is pretty close to your 3 Kilos. If it is only 900 platinum, it would probably have a density nearer to gold in the 19 - 19.5 range.

Just some data

My assessment from the picture with no USSR Bar knowledge is that it is very poorly cast & I would expect cleaner letters & symbols on a bar so important. Otherwise, who ever made it would be laughed at for poor smithing.

3 kilos is roughly 96 troy ounces. Platinum is currently trading at US 1693 per.. thats a whole lota Hershey bars..

I'd find an expert real quick!

Yep! I'll have to ride with CRUSADER on this one.

I hope your fantasy find works out for you but I'm skeptical. The Soviet Union didn't use USSR, that's our translation. Theirs looks more like CCCP. And that's the ugliest hammer and sickle I've ever seen. And if someone actually lost a 3-kilo bar of platinum you'd have met them on your hunt, still looking for it. I think souvenir but I wish you otherwise. Good luck.

Chuck

Wouldn't the USSR have stamped or molded CCCP on something like this??? :dontknow:

I say fake bud just from looking around internet.......
