What do you think, is it real or not? Dated 1776. I got a wheat penny from the beach as well as a buffalo nickel, date is gone, 1982 Jefferson, 2 pairs of sunglasses, 3 pulltabs and a piece of (I think) shipwreck brass. Also how do I get sand out of my nose? Winds were 30-50 mps and I had to detect at times with my eyes closed. Chased my wind blown hat into the ocean to retrieve it. Left early. On the way home bought an underwater detector. george1.jpggeorge 3.jpg

It's 24mm and 8.29 grams, which is about right for weight. Only plutonium and platinum weigh more, so it's not gold over silver. Can't be iron. I'm going to try to find a dealer to look at it today.

The weight and diameter are about right...correct weight and diameter is 8.4g...25mm, give or take a bit for wear it looks like you have the real deal ...good luck, and nice find.

I'm not sure but myself, and most of my hunting buddies have all dug fake gold coins on the beach, more than once. I think people like playing dirty tricks! I hope for your sake that its real, it looks good (no corrosion), I just wouldn't get my hopes up... HH!

This is what worries me, plus the detail is not quite right with the crown & lettering looking blurry. Fingers crossed, as I could flip a coin on this one, the way I feel, but based on the photo, its not one I would buy. Lets hope my gut is wrong, please update us?

I took it to the best, most reliable coin dealer in the state today to check it out. It's snowing here so no digging (until maybe later). He said it was a genuine British 1 Guinea and placed a value on it about $450. Said there were too many scratches, etc. on it to be worth more. Overall, I'm happy. I thought these things were worth more but I guess he's looking at it more for bullion value than numismatics.

Glad it's real, I thought it might be but you never can tell, but the weight and correct diameter were there. As for the value I would place a little bit higher, it's worth more than just bullion, at least £400 in sterling, or about $650 ish.
