Hello to everyone and I would greatly appreciate any HELP. I started with a Garrett Ace 350. My question is this.....When I read an item at say 6 inches and dig say a 4 inch spot, then I set my coil on top of the hole and use the pinpoint and it still reads 6 inches then have I dug in the wrong spot, does the reading mean 6 inches from the top of the soil in the hole I have dug, or is it reading the distance from my coil including airspace? I hope I have explained this so that you can understand and any help would be appreciated! Also, I have noticed that a lot of times I dig and instantly find a small piece of coal in the first scoop.....will my detector hit on coal? Again any help would be appreciated guys and hope I haven't broken any protocol here I just enjoy this already even though a silver quarter is the best I have found yet besides the aluminum cans I still enjoy the crap out of my new hobby! Thanks.....detecting in mountains of East TN! Also if I am out of line here please let me know and sorry?

Welcome to TN!
I believe depth is measured from the bottom of the coil to the target, if I'm not mistaken! Someone with more technical knowledge could give a more detailed answer!

Welcome aboard!! :)

Welcome to T-Net. When correct i.d. is made of target then in pinpoint mode the depth from coil to target will be pretty close. Multiple targets can complicate a little if pinpointing near larger targets or if one your after is in the plug and more in hole area. With coil away from a target hold piece of coal or any suspicious of signal creating object and slowly swing your hand holding it just above your coil to hear a signal if its the cause. Seems not all but some pieces will give a tone.Sometimes its slag or just with impurities.

Welcome, you are correct, the depth is comparing the target to the bottom of the coil. This is generally based on a coin size target, so a soda can or large piece of iron may show shallower depth than actual. Those pieces of coal may be hot rocks, see if they set off your detector once you get them out of the ground. Always recheck your holes to see if you missed an additional target.

Thanks to all of you, your help is greatly appreciated relevantchair,smalltowngirl13 and Metal Detecting Stuff! I also appreciate the Welcome response as a newcomer here, it sounds like I have found some friends indeed! Gotta go find some Treasure now but I will call on your expertise again I am sure!

Welcome to T-net from Indiana! Lawn mowers are your friend! High grass not! Now that you know the depth is not the depth in the ground but the distance from the coil to the target object you will be like most of the rest of us...You will start getting excited when you see or hear lawn mowers going at you favorite spots!...Even better is a warm wet winter day when there is not much grass left at all...A six inch deep high tone signal with the coil sittin' dead flat on the ground? That is what is dreams are made of...Happy hunting!
