I found these item at an old property in which I found KGII and Hibernia coppers, a Rev War button, and a mix of other items.

The disc is crumbling like you would expect a piece of pewter to do after such a long stay underground. In my opinion it is pewter, even thought the photos don't show how grey it is.

On the obverse the number "40" has been stamped. It has also been holed.

On the reverse, which I didn't notice until after taking the pictures, there is a "figure 8" hole that appears to me to be what remains after a button shank falls off of a button.

This answers some of the questions in my mind when I first found it, "Why would they make a medallion, id tag etc out of Pewter?"

So my question, is this just your ordinary run of the mill id/luggage tag??? Could it be for something else? I'm pretty sure when it was a button it dated to the 1700's. Can anyone tell based on the stamped 40 font when/what year it may have been done?

I think at a certain point stamping a copper disc would have been just as easy rather than re-purposing an old button?

Could this have been a military button, 40th regiment, and then someone wore it as a medal or medallion????

Some sort of property tag?

I'd love to hear back from everyone on it.

Here's a link to my original post including all of the items I found at this property.

Thanks.
