Good eye , help me pick mine , lol ... Good job , how long has this been a hobby of yours Trez ? Were the coins beach finds , because you seem to know alot about finding them and if so or not do certain wrecks have several different coin varieties or all similar ?

I have lived on the treasure coast since 1989...started beach hunting/treasure the winter of 95' - I watched the old timers and a few hard core boys work the beaches...up and down the coast here...soon I asked questions...some would answer, some not (lol). I would follow them from beach to beach, county to county...I learned quickly...so I began to go everyday and back to the spots they worked...whether the beach was cut or not and finally began to find what everyone was looking for...I became hooked, from that day on it kept me out of the bars and changed my life, I would like to think for the better, lol.
I cannot understand why so few really enjoy this style of coinage...as I began to find them, conserve them, study them, collect them from fellow collectors, and seeing them for their uniqueness...I just kept going with them. I have been fortunate with my hunting and with fellow hunters...and seeing the hundred of hundreds of silver cobs and gold... through the years it was an avenue of study that I prefered over other types of collecting. I won't call myself an expert and I never packed china for Sotherbys either
but, I will give you an honest answer and get you headed in the right direction...and if and when you do find that expert to confirm...I'll know w/o you even telling me pretty much what they said.

Got side tracked...
most of my coins...I have found beach hunting.
I do trade with fellow collectors, purchase, barter etc...believe it or not, you can find some sleepers on ebay...yes, there is a lot of junk out there, but if you know what your looking for and better yet (what not) you can snag some pretty cool pieces. Buyer beware...and new buyers especially (stick with the pros) like Sedwick and the several others who do this as their job. They will take care of you and provide you a safe place to make purchases........
The above cobs...
1 on the left (Valladolid) mint (obtained from Spain)...(rare to see one)
center cob, Spain also, but the uniqueness of denomination on the left (rare to see one)
the big 8 on right, probably the nicest M struck over Q that many have seen...(circa Atocha) it not a great photo but when you hold it in hand...the Q is easily visible under the M and even the denomination has been counterstruck, this is what I look for...uniqueness.

They kept the Margarita coins in good shape, because they didnt find a million of them at once. They really should have taken their time, like they did with this one. Nice cobs! Very detailed. I didnt know some of the Atocha coins were stamped over. Then again most of the silver was beat up so bad it was hard to tell. Some(many) from the Maravillas were stamped over the date. Steve.

Atocha era...circa 1616-1617...I don't have a cert. so I can't and won't say for sure it is from that wreck...but it is typical for such.
I believe the 1985 coinage found on the Atocha produced some extremely fine examples, because they were finding entire chests of them...and the cobs found within the concreted chests where almost mint condition.
I do agree about the cleaning process they use...it ranks on the bottom of my preference in cleaning, dead last in fact. lol
Yes, they have found over assayer cobs from the Atocha...most wrecks will produce a few. Sometimes they get by the coin graders, that's where I begin to look.
Sarasota huh, my home for 25 years......Siesta Key/Palm Island rocked back in the day.

Anna's is till there, now there is 2, one in the village, across from the Beach Club, and one way down South past Stickney Point rd, near the 7/11. They still have the Surfer and I think its still the most popular sandwich. My sister used to be the day bartender at the Beach Club from about '86 to maybe 95 or so. Kathy with long blond hair. Mainly worked the day shift. The old Beach club was torn down, and they built a new one, kind of a fern bar, (read more expensive) but it is not bad. Now a days Gilligans, Daquiri deck, and a few more are really hopping any night of the week and weekends all day. Still has an island, laid back kind of feel. I grew up in Venice, but moved to Sarasota about 25 years ago. Give me an email before you come over this way, and we can get together. Where do you live now? I go over to Indiatlantic a few times a year to visit and hunt the good spots. Steve.

2 reales 159? to 1606 - OD w/ 3 banners (Valladolid Mint) on the right before I cleaned it...sometimes, it takes off more detail than one is looking to achieve...

Let me tell you what NOT do;
Do NOT have someone clean your coins that is NOT an expert.
I had my son send me one of my Gold coin/trinkets. He thought that is looked pretty dirty so he thought that he would clean it up.
He used a Dermal with a fine sandpaper disc at 10,000 rpm's.
It cleaned it alright to where it is bright and shiny BUT when you blow the the Gold up through a scanned copy there appears to be a THUMB PRINT on both sides. This was caused by the grit of the sanding disc.
The trinket/coin was double struck which is fine with me but to sand the thing really P.me OFF BIG TIME.
By the way I have still not found out who the assayer was "oD".
I DO have a few that are in mint like condition-much better than any Gold ll Escudo that were recovered from the ATOCHA and these coins WERE minted in Granada Spain during King Philip ll reign.
If anyone wants to see what I am talking about send me an EM and I will send you a scan.

On the middle coin there at the bottom what appears to be some marks. These marks look exactly like the marks made with a Dremal sanding disc. Just like the ones my son made on my gold trinket but yours are not as many.
You did not have my son handle them did you .
