Hello everyone. I'm Edward Lopez and during the '90s until 2008 (maybe later) I went by the handle "Silver Fox". As a quick intro, please visit what I think was my last thread on April 27, 2008 - "Silver Fox's Views of the 1st Tri-State Cloves Lake, Staten Island Fling": http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/t...oves-lake-staten-island-fling.html#msg1117285

The reason I'm here is because of my not-so-great health. When I started metal detecting in 1979 while living in the San Fernando Valley next to Los Angeles and until my retirement in the late 2000s my health was excellent thanks to my THing activity. Now, I'm going to turn 81 and my walking comfortably suffers, I can't run, my speech and handwriting have slowed down and my future doesn't look that good.

I don't know if returning to metal detecting in New York City's Riverside Park is the answer to better health but it's a new thought for me and I'll know for sure when Spring/Summer arrive. I'm not going to do it for the finds 'cause I think I've recovered almost every coin left in the park since I think I've found every silver coin (and little gold) that was ever dropped. I'd rather detect in Central Park where there is still a ton of treasure to be found but the Parks Department doesn't allow it. I retrieved more than my share in gold, silver and lots of old coins including a 1787 Connecticut Copper and a 1848 blue bottle. The Parks Department does issue a permit (not sure as of this writing) but it's for lesser empty parks including Riverside.

I've owned many detectors including the legendary Teknetics Mark I "Ltd." (red and black). Now, I'm again considering a Fisher M-Scope F5 but at ebay they're going for $500-$550. I'm hoping for a good deal such as a recent sale of a near-new with headphones for $195 shipped.

I'm interested in reading everyone's adventures but I'll prefer those from F5 owners. Talk to you later.

Actually, that won't be necessary but thank you for your consideration. I may have jumped the gun with my post. After I did so, I told my wife of my plans and right away she wasn't in favor. Primarily, because I'm now older and carrying a semi-expensive metal detector, even in an appropriate bag, could present me as an easy target for the criminal element that's constantly in the news attacking everyone but especially the elderly. My suggested a viable solution and that is to rejoin the nearby gym and access it free with a program called "Silver Sneakers" offered to senior citizens on most insurance plans. I had gone to the gym for a number of years and I didn't see any improvement so I quit. But now listening to my wise wife I'll try that approach before returning to metal detecting. I can't take on one or a bunch of attackers. So gym machines may be my way to go. I'll still visit here and pine for the old days.

Good Luck on your working out project. :occasion14:

Perhaps you could meet up with a local detectorist and hunt Riverside Park...safety in numbers! :icon_thumleft:

Funny you mention Riverside Park. My 89 year old Aunt lives on 91st/Riverside Dive...

Thank you all for the friendly welcome back. I'm not out of the woods yet. Even though come Spring I'll decide what to do, gym and/or metal detecting, I'm still going to keep an eye on ebay sales and if an offer comes up that I can't resist I'll buy an F5 even if it's just to caress it on my sofa! Riverside Drive and 91st street is a wonderful address with a great neighborhood and view. But I live next to Central Park and it's a drag not to be able to detect in it. If I could I probably would have never stopped detecting and I'd be in better health. Oh, well, here's to a better future.

BTW, teaming up with another detectorist to hunt in Riverside Park is a good idea but detectorists in that Park are as rare as hen's teeth. I can't remember meeting more than one or two in all of the years I hunted there. An armed perp won't care and I can't run to give chase and if I/we did we'd put our lives in jeopardy. It's really not that bad but all you need is one time which would result in shopping for another detector.

Here's a nice example of an exceptional find. While carrying my detector I spied what turned out to be a 2-3/4" high 14-kt gold bling: Jesus carrying a cross! The 2 small pieces were a hanging ring, 10-kt. I've always wondered when the person noticed it missing and if they made an attempt to look for it. A similar one was selling on Canal Street for $600 and mine was better detailed.

Congrats on the beautiful religious charm. :occasion14:

I hope your winter workout regimen helps you in your ultimate goal of detecting once again! :icon_thumleft:

Ed,,
The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation removed Riverside Park from the permit.
Central Park is not and has not ever been open to metal detecting. Central Park is patrolled by Park's Police, Park Rangers, NYPD, and National Parks Police. They will not be happy if they come upon you while you are digging.
You can download an application for a metal detecting permit for 2019. It comes with a list of all the parks and beaches where you are allowed to detect.

Welcome back.

Welcome back! I met an electrician in the Phoenix area last year named Edward Lopez and he was the best I'd ever met! I'd say he's in good company having the same name as you!

Welcome from Corsicana, Texas!

You are right about that! The other day when I looked at a PDF of the Permit I must have glazed over it 'cause I didn't pay attention to the list of parks as I wasn't going to any of them and without seeing Riverside Park on the list my old memories worked their illusory magic and I must have superimposed the name on the list. Well, that really does it for me and future THing. I have detected in several of the listed park and at the end of the day I came home with 99% clad. I know that Central Park was never open to metal detecting but I got away with it for about 10 years, finding tons of old silver and clad coins and everything that all of us have found. Imagine, 4 W.L. halves within a foot of each other! I saw many detectorists alone and in groups. I was visited by various officers and I always lied about visiting from New Jersey and not being educated about the rules and regulations. I knew I was breaking the "law" but they were unfair regulations and I saw park employees and vehicles and mounted patrolmen do more damage to the ground than me for I never used a digging tool relying on my homemade fiberglass probes. I even wrote an article with photos about the "official damage". I wrote 17 articles for LOST TREASURE and TREASURE FACTS. Thanks for pointing out my oversight about Riverside Park, I'm grateful. Here's to my long, stress free future!
