Hey guys,

While sorting through my "undesirable" broken flat buttons, I noticed an etched design along the edge. After some light cleaning I realized the pattern circles towards the center. The button was dug at a Rev War crossing point, is likely pewter or tombac, and measures 20mm in diameter. I think I see a head eating its tail at the center of the button- anyone seen a variant like this??

I can't see enough detail to convince me, but there were buttons essentially like you're describing, a couple which show up in the link below, both leading to the same discussion on another forum (it's still unclear to me if we are allowed to link directly to other unaffiliated detecting forums): 1800's coiled rattlesnake button - Google Search
