Mark wrote the following.

Hi Everyone,

I just implemented a new "Post Rating" feature in some of the forums....

To see how it works, simply make sure you're logged in, and go to a topic... HERE FOR EXAMPLE - look at the top-right of the posts... you can now rate posts! (0-5)

I would very much appreciate it if you'd use this feature often... but please - RARELY set it at 5 - saving that for the very, very best! Personally, I wouldn't rate any "Today's Finds" posts higher than a ONE - if that post has no pictures!

Ratings should be like this...

0 - poor (yes you can give a post a 0 rating!)
1 - fair
2 - good
3 - very good
4 - very very good
5 - outstanding!!!

With this new rating system, I'll keep an eye on the ratings and move the best posts to the new, "The Best Of TreasureNet" forum.

Thanks a BUNCH for your help!

Thanks,
Marc Austin

So does it produce an average of the ratings given to the subject by a number of people, and if so does it ignore people who look at the posting without giving it a rating ?

All registered users can rate the posts. I encourage everyone to rate every post they see, unless they are pulltabs and bottle caps!

I implemented this so everyone can help determine what should appear in "The Best Of TreasureNet". You can also click on the "Rating" column text, and sort by ratings.

To rate a post, simply look at a topic....

here's an example...

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,35639.0.html

At the top right of the post is a pull down menu to select your rating.

It's VERY simple, and helps us sort out the true treasures.

Thanks for you help!

Marc

p.s. Cornelius, I beg to differ with you. It will be fun for new comers to see the best of the best. New comers who see pulltabs and bottlecaps are more likely to turn and run from this hobby! IMHO

Sorry Marc,

but the imformation does not say how the rating shown is calculated. Is it the average of those who bothered to rate the topic, ignoring anybody who did not, or is it the total points given divided by the total number of people who have viewed the topic? I think it is probably the former, so if only one person rates it, that sets the rating, even though lots of people did not think it even worth the effort of rating it.

Incidentally, Cornelius, I agree with you that it adds nothing because one man's meat is another man's poison.

To illustrate the point, I just halved the rating shown on the "US Officials arrest Scuba diver" topic by giving it a zero rating. I think it is a good topic, but just wanted to show how unrepresentative the rating can be.

Marc,

Sorry if I have missed something obvious, but what does the "ignore user" box mena that has started to appear under some posters' names. I have such a box under Cablava's name on his postings, but it would be a crime to do so.
