Hi guys I need some help with this one. I was out detecting today and come across this civil war era token. It's about the size of a nickle and has a bust type of head in the middle of it. It has 13 stars that go around it on the front. It is dated 1863. When turned over to the back it reads like this. Kellogg and Co. Maker's of lumber, doors, blinds, and sash. Kalamazoo Mich. I was able to look at other similar one's on the net that comanded a nice price for these coins. I know there is a reference book out there that tells you the rarity and value of these pieces. If anyone out there could help me out with this one would be great. I'll check back. Looking forward to seeing what you guys can come up with.

Thanks again Jeremy

Listed in "United States Tokens" 1700 - 1900 by Russell Rulau on page 476 as a civil war token R5 (rariety 5) metal = copper ,,, Values start in VG at $25 and go up to BU for $135... Dark, dug coins that show porosity/pitting, and signs of being dug = less value.

Hope this helps,

HH and post some more finds!

Thanks alot Lonewolfe. Glad to know you had a guide book on hand and were able to refer to it. I appreciate you taking the time to do so man. In a way I'm glad it's not a real rare one because I cleaned it. It's not really the value to me. It was the ecitement of digging it and seeing a dirty coin I never saw before with some kind of bust man on the front. It had me going today while out in the Field. I always like to make new and unique finds.

Through a little research and what you told me the rarity on the coin of an R5. I was able to look at a estimated rarity on the number you categorized it in through your book. It may have even told you. But what struck me was when I looked that up it was on a rarity of only 76 to 200 in existence. That's one rare find considering the u.s coins I find that I think are rare with only 400,000 minted. That makes that number look huge. Even though there isn't a huge demand for these coins and as rare as they are. How could they ever do anything but get more valuable. It was cool. Just the time I spent today with my dad and younger brother looking over this rare coin was we learned alot about something that is from the past. Just something I wanted to pass along for the mind.

I'll be honest with you all, for all of you out there who post pictures of things / coins inside those coin holders or packs
I don't know how anyone can ID anything looking at these pictures, especially making some kind of "Rare" coin evaluation.
I find it next to impossible to see any details on these picture....
How do you all do it ??
Please, if you are going to post pictures can you scan them outside the coin holders so we can see them ?

That's how I was able to ID it for him by looking it up in my token book! They only made 1 variety from that maker an of that type.
