Rare find in dimes

Yesterday I went through a normal bag and thought that someone painted a dime.
But it was a 1908 Indian $2.50 gold piece. Close inspection reveled that it was a jewlery piece.

Was it an actual coin or was it made to look like a coin for jewelry? That must have been a heart-stopper. I can't wait to see pics.
