Very nice find !! Maybe it went on leather ammo box ?

I am no expert in this and can not figure this out.. I sent this off to Ridgeway as he seems the man. The fact that it is super thin with no GW marks on back makes me think it may be authentic.

Looks very similar to the pre-war Virginia belt plates which were also very thin metal. I have attached a picture of a complete buckle from Stanley Phillip's relic book. You can see how thin the metal is (stamped with no lead fill). Awesome find!!image.jpg

In trying to find an exact match, I found one in Kerksis' book that is shown on page 433. Note on your example that the very tip of the wheat is somewhat rounded. Many were much more pointed. He says your plate is circa 1840.
