Rare 1807 Phoenix Button ! Small no 5

I went back to dam/mill on the coastal steam this morning for two hours that I have been working ! The signls are getting slim there but I had made a few good finds there this year ! Today I found a Phoenix button ! I first thought war of 1812 because of the style ,1 piece flat ! it had a regiment # on it 5, and what I thought was an eagle ! But I posted it on what is it ? Ironspike was the 1st to point out it was an 1807 Haitian phoenix button ! I guess they are rare east of the Mississippi river ! Only 10 or so found on this side ! They listed 3 from Virginia , 1 from New Hampshire but did not list the others ! I learned a lot today ! This might be the 1 st Phoenix button found in Maine if the links posted on what is it are accurate !!! Go figure!!! MaineRelic

Out here in California, those are found only at sites that pre-date about 1830, 'mission-era' sites, prior to secularization. They are quite collectible as evidenced by recent sales on EBay ($100 + per button). That's QUITE A FIND for Maine. You can read more about them at:

Thanks Ziphius ! Yes the history of these buttons is fasinating ! To think this button was made in England for the Haitian military shiped through Hawaii to an Oregon Trading post and then made it's way to Maine Is amazing !! MaineRelic

Congrats and welcome to the Phoenix button club!

I have the same button except it is a No. 4! Mine was found near San Rafael Mission in CA.

Wow!
I realize this is a really rare and history packed button.
It is a banner find imo

Almost all of the buttons made their way to Wyeth's trading post. Here, they were believed to be traded to the Indians. The Indians in turn traded with other tribes, and eventually the buttons made their way up and down the West Coast. The buttons have been found at period sites from Alaska to Southern California . Of the 10 or so buttons that have been reported east of the Rocky Mountains, 3 have come from Virginia . , I wonder where the next one will come from.

This was in reference to the last one found in New Hampshire selling for 299.00 USD

Congrats on the Phoenix button, and welcome to the club :hello2:

I found my first two just last month in central California, both near Mission era Spanish sites:

Here's a pretty good background on the Phoenix buttons, and how they're purported to find their way to the West Coast:

http://arrowheadology.com/forums/ar...149-phoenix-buttons-far-west-trade-goods.html

Note that these buttons have been found at all 21 California Mission era sites, as well as the Russian Fur Trading post Fort Ross. The only thing that seems a bit off, is that the King of Haiti died (committed suicide actually) in 1820. Many of the mission sites were abandoned during the 1830's, which is when the trading posts are purported to have brought the buttons to the West Coast, but it would seem for them to be at the California Mission sites, they would have shown up at an earlier time, at least ten years earlier :icon_scratch:

At any rate, congrats on the find, I'd keep pounding that site :headbang:

HH,
Brian

Thanks for the encouragement IronSpike ! The button is pretty worn ! It was in a gravel section of the stream and received alot of scouring over the years. I took several PICS and posted the best I could . The detail is muddled on the button not in the PICS . The his torcal significance of the find is what interests me. An early Pacifc northwest trading button made it's way to Maine !
