I found this in a vacant lot next to some old, but still used train tracks. I believe it's made of brass and is about 2 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide. If its too hard to see in the picture, it has a number 27513, and says "TO BE USED BY THE CENT. PAC. R.R. Co. -ONLY-". There is also a patent date on the very top of July 27, 1880. Any railroad experts who may know what it was used for?

Seems that it's a somewhat rare tag! It could have some value even though it's broken and a bit bent.

I was lucky because I had thrown it into my junk metal bucket without having cleaned it first. As it was laying on top I glanced down and only then saw that there was writing in it. Most if the time I can figure out what something is, but this one wasn't so easy. Thanks again for the quick ID.
