Love finding local history.
Found this in Port Royal.
Dates between 1878-1898

Got that much figured out.
Under Port Royal to Washington: via PR&A and a list other connecting RR's.
It is stamped on the front and back.
The other side has the number on top and lettering on bottom.
It is 2 X 11/2 inches.
What would it have been it's use?

Looks like a baggage check tag to me.
I've found a few of these here in Southern Ontario.

Nice find,
Dave

Found Another

I was hoping there might be more tags on the site.
Found another, but not a Port Royal tag.
It is not in good shape, even though, I believe it is not as old as PR tag.
It is stamped SR, below that: LOCAL and tag #.
Spartanburg RR was 1 of many merged into the PR&A RR in the late 1800's.

At this point that's all I can come up with, but I doubt myself.
Any ideas, which railroad it is from?
