Many on this forum have tried to postulate whatnthe Founding Father's meant on the subject of guns.....well here is a statement I came across from one, Gen, Geo. Washington, in his address to the 1st Congress.....

"Firearms stand next to the Constitution itself.
They are the people's liberty teeth keystone.....the rifle and pistol
are equally indispendsible....more than ninety-nine % by their silence
indicate that they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere
of firearms every where restrains evil interference. When firearms
go, all goes, we need them every hour"

We have been not only given rights that are not to be infringed, but the backing of history!......Gary

From which Washington address was that quote taken? I do not believe it is in his first State of the Union.

Good luck to all,

I'm not sure that it was the first "State of the Union", I didn't say it was, only reference was an address before the first Congress, and no date was given in the citation......Gary

Bookaroo,

I'll add that the quote was found on the Letter's to the editors page in the Magizine...."Muzzleloader". This is a periodicl devoted to the colonial period, and the history of the times, weapons, and woodsrunning skills that have been sorely neglected as we have progressed in this modern world. It's a step back in time, written be both scholars, and people who long for the old day's. We are all dinosaurs, but some have always preferred the old ways, and still prosper with their use. Thanks......Gary

According to the info I have located, it is a "convenient" misquote. Perhaps an amalgam of quotes all mashed together.

The one I found states:

"
Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon, and citizen's firearms are indelibly related.
From the moment the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable.
Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands.
The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place of honor with all that's good.
When firearms, go all goes; we need them every hour.

"

Gary,

Some folks have intellectual knowing, some folks have an intellect of knowing whence ALL comes from.

Forgive me for being slow on the uptake.

Is it a George Washington quote or something someone else wrote or said and attributed to the Father of Our Country?

Good luck to all,
