I found this while detecting on my own hilltop property. Before our house build, this was a hay field. This looks like a toy cannon barrel at first glance, but the rear end of it is blocked by a solid piece of metal, and it has a perfectly oval hole on one side. It does not have the standard "ears" that a typical toy cannon has to attach it to a carrier. It has a curious keyhole at the rear end, which has a hollow cavity behind it. It is about 3 inches long, and has no maker's mark or writing on it. It appears to be made of lead, zinc, or tin, I don't know for sure. Any help from fellow forum members is greatly appreciated.

Hello Face-In-The-Hole and welcome to Tnet.

This is just a guess, but it looks like it could be some type of whistle or organ reed.

Thanks H_S, I thought it could be a whistle too, this is an area that has been hunted for decades. Maybe an old dog whistle?

Have you tried to blow into it? Maybe it still works after being cleaned...

It looks like the mouth piece to a wooden flute or fife. Hard to tell any sense of size by the pics. :icon_pirat:

Tensioning device? You pass the cord through the side wall and the key hole keeps the knotted cord from pulling back inside again. :dontknow:
