I went out today on a quick hunt, not at all a serious one either. Since I was at the place for other reasons for a couple hours and there were good woods in the back I gave it a try. First find was a nice bronze or brass skeleton key (any idea on age?), second find was a tiny horse shoe (not in photo), third thing I found was a pristine 1979 motorcycle licence plate from Rhode Island, the newest sticker was from 1979, there were other stickers under the 1979 one (not in photo). The last cool thing I found was what looked at first like a toasted Indian Head Cent. I don't find Indian Head Cents at all because the places I go to are too old so funny enough this was only my second. I think it cleaned up nice.

I also ended up finding what looked like two smashed musket balls and two percussion caps.

Cool key and a great year for the IH!

Your IH is in better shape than the two I have found so far and nice key!

Thanks, the last one I found was 1864 now this one is 1873. I thought that it was toasted when I found it because it was a mess! I could not even see the head on it or the wreath on the back. Then with some simple cleaning the design showed up and the date.

Never a bad day when an IH pops up

I wish I had the problem you have with sites being too old for IHC's. Although 1873 ain't exactly new, lol. Nice finds.

Coinman I think old keys are great finds. Can't wait to see your finds from a serious hunt.

Very cool key! If that is your non-serious hunt...I'm trying too hard! Waaaay to hard!

Nice finds congrats!

Very nice finds CM123! I have yet to find a skeleton key, so that one looks killer to me! I really like the IHCs too. We have the opposite problem, my places are too new for Indians, and yours are to old. If we could "average" them, we would be swimming in Indians! Congrats.

Those 19th century finds will get Ya they to the next colonial treasures bud. I like the 60s and 70s indian heads.

Thanks guys! Anyone have any ideas of the age of the key, if needed, I can take more photos. My first key was newer, hollow brass with iron teeth found in a 1940's trash pile, my second was rusted iron and part of the top chipped off during cleaning, found in a 1910's-1950's trash pile. This is the best one I found out of those two.

That key would be good enough to satisfy most any hunter...nice finds!

Also, Here is the licence plate, kind of cool. A less than two weeks ago I found a MASS 1930 Licence Plate, Last year I found a 1936 tractor NH Licence plate and 1940 NH automobile licence plate. I now have motorcycle, tractor, and automobile from NH, MASS, and now RI.
