ok more questions from a newbie
frist of all does anyone have experince with a garret scorpion detector? I recently purchased one and have had some sucess finding some clad coins and one wheat penny but thats about it. I live in a remote part of montana so one spot i like to md are the local campgrounds. The prob there is if i search in all metal mode i cant take a step without finding junk..bread twist ties, chunks of melted alumumin ect, and if i discriminate all i find are clads, the tests i have done with my md seem to show that to find silver i should look in all metal mode, should i spend the time digging it all?
also was wondering if anyone could tell me where i could find info on post civil war troop movements?
I was thinking if i could pinpoint calvery movments, and campsites and such they would be good places to look.. any tips on mding are appericeated hh majik

well first off. to find coins you should search in the Auto Ground Cancelling Motion Mode. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS DETECTOR EXCEPT WHAT I'V READ go to http://www.losttreasure.com/fieldtests/? & read the Report on it. till someone comes on here and gives you some info. GOOD LUCK ; Jeff

majik - i personally don't worry about whether or not a coin is pure silver or a clad. there's a lot more clads than there is old silver coins and the clads spend real good. sometimes junk isn't junk. about a year and a half ago , i found a target at about three inches thatgave a nickel/pull tab reading on my whites 5900 di pro. not wanting to miss out on a nickel i dug it. it looked like a leather ring. upon inspection it turned out to be a mans golden ring - just a plain gold ring but to hide the value of it - i guess - someone had done a really good job of putting the leather on it. whoever did it must have lived in a rough neighborhood. wayne

I can give you a little advise on your hunting, as for hunting in an area like you dicribe its probably best to
hunt in discrim mode, so you don't get those iron targets like bread ties.
Melted aluminum globs are very strong, like coins and won't be descrimed out.
Almost all coins will read really high on your machine, (except nickels) including silver so if your not getting them in discrim mode, then your eather not walking over the silver or more likely there is none there.
Like the last man said, there is so much more clad coins out there and even when you are in an area
known to have produced silver or older coins its no garrantee that you will find any as it may have been
cleaned out years ago, regardless of what you read in a magazine, your chances of walking onto some site and digging countless old silver coins is almost non existant in this day and age.
The best you can hope for are a few wheaties and an occasional silver dime.
Good luck.
Richard
