...have a few questions for you, if you don't mind. I see you're from Beaufort, I'm from Goose Creek, right outside Charleston.

Saw a couple of articles in the paper about the proposed widening of Hwy. 17, and how it will affect some Civil War batteries where 17 crosses the Combahee, along with an old ferry spot.

I'm new at this, so I've been doing some digging for info. A satellite view I looked at shows a boat landing right at the crossing.

Anyways, are you familiar with this area? I was wondering about diving the area around it. I assume the Combahee would be somewhat comparible to the Cooper River in terms of visibility, so I would be comfortable with that. Do you have any idea of the depth, current, and tidal influence on that area? I'm wondereing if it would be possible to shore dive it instead of bringing a boat down there. I'm probably going to drive down there in the next week or two to scout it out a bit.

Thanks for any info that you could provide.................. Joe

Joe,

Nothing like Good ole Black Water diving! There have been a lot of great finds in the Combahee. Many Onion bottles and relics from the 1700's. I have also seen a number of Indian artifacts come out of that area.

I don't dive it often but its just like most other rivers here. Be prepared for near zero vis. but watch out for the alligators. I have seen a few 12 footers up around that area.

The boat landing you are talking about is right there on Hwy 17. I would not dive from the landing, but its doable! Some of the better sites you will need a boat to get to.

Good luck and let me know what you find!
