Detector(s) used
Minelab X-terra 70, Fisher 1270.
I use a MineLab X-terra 70...
Sometime soon I'm going to be going out to an old farmhouse.
I've detected some of the fields and such, but never close to the house.
When I've tried getting close, there is so much trash and junk, it's overwhelming.
Next time I go out, I want to try it!
I'm going to use just a little 6-inch coil.
I'm not used to such trashy areas, orrr that size coil.
I want to eliminate as much trash as possible, without missing anything good.
Where should I put my discrimination?
Should it be different from my regular setting?
???

how i normally approach a situation like that is to use the small coil and back off of the discrim. ( i know it sounds crazy!) see with the small coil you will be able to get inbetween the trash, and with the low discrim you can really listen to each target and decide yourself whether you want to dig it or not. hope this helps a little.

Its been my experience that with a smaller coil you don't actually eliminate the trash, but the coil helps separate it into single targets that you can then decide to dig or not based on the indications of your numbers, tones, etc.

I hunt a lot of these type of sites. Just go slow so you can hear all the targets and investigate each one.
One thing to keep in mind is when youget a good target it's pinpointing may be off slightly due to all the trash and iron. Perseverance wins in the end.
Good luck.

I dont use the ex-terra... but I use a four inch coil in trashy areas and love it... it WILL help you...

Go slow...

Go slow...

Thanks a ton guys! :D

Re: Hunting in high trash areas

NewB,

I have a little different angle for you. In a high trash area such as close to a modern day house divide that location up further like this: #1. Around the front and back doors. #2. The paths leading away from the front and back doors to the street, garage etc. #3. Look for a clothes line or at least a hook for one by the back door or a window. Detector along a path where the clothes line ran. etc. etc. In other words increase your odds by detecting high traffic areas or identifying where human activity took place within that high trash zone. You will still find a lot of junk but you will find more of the coins, rings etc. too. Joe

i run my t-2 set on 2 tones, and run the disc real low to help, unmask targets next to iron, wish the xt 50 had the 2 tone optionlike the 70 does
