Re: Question on rock tumblers & supplies

Hello Storm,

I recently went out in search of a tumbler... to clean my dug clad coins.
The small harbor freight units are cheap enough, and you get what you pay for.
I suppose they have a purpose.
They will accept 150 pennies at a time.

With well over 1000 coins so far this year, that wasn't gonna cut it, for me. ;D

So I bought a larger tumbler, used, at a flea market.
Similar to a Lortone QT-6. or, as they say, a six pounder.
It would only accept about 1/3 of my load at a time, an it needed work...
So I bought another used one. A Star - Diamond that was a bit larger, and had the motor converted to larger.
It did OK on a third of my load.

Not sure what your experience is, or what your intended purpose is, but tumbling is a long process.

I am NOT an expert, but I could not advise a harbor freight tumbler.
They must run constantly, for weeks on end, to achieve the end result when tumbling stones.

If buying a new unit, I would advise you start with a six pounder, or the double barrel model.

Hope that helps you out.

Re: Question on rock tumblers & supplies

rmptr,
Thanks for the quick response to my post...the purpose of the rock tumbler (for now at least, till start finding some coinage...lol) is to do just that...tumble rocks (my boyfriend wants to get it, I'm just posting this for him since I'm a member) He's been wanting one for some time, and I'd like to get him a decent one for his birthday (coming up quickly...LOL)
I know nothing about tumblers, though I had an uncle that was into the hobby, he used to rock hunt & pan for gold, but unfortunately he's been gone now for quite a few years. Anyway, Big thanks on your help!!
