There are both clad and 90% silver S-mint (proof) halves. Edge checking as suggested above is the best way to distinguish them from each other.
 

Weighing is also a good indicater of what it's made of. If it's silver it should weigh 12.5 grams I believe.

I was wondering this myself. Looking on a coin valuation site I saw that some of the proofs carry a circulated value of $6, not sure if you could really get that though. I have 2 clad proofs so far that I am keeping in the pile.

I have found 40%ers that look like copper clad but were silver clad. Those 40%ers have enough copper in them to look orange when they're in good condition.
