I'm reading the history of the Spanish Main.....In 1523, French corsairs two of Spains treasure fleet only days from home, and liberated the treasure before it reached the King. My question is how was the gold, silver, and jewels valuated? The inventory of the captured treasure:
680 lbs. pearls
500 lbs. bagged gold dust
3 huge chests of gold ingots
numerous chests of silver ingots
coffers of jewels......and other sundry treasure.
It also said that in the first decade of this liquidation of South America, 10.5 million troy ozs., nearly 750,000 lbs. of gold were acquired. I can roughly figure out today's worth knowing the value of gold and silver, but how was it figured in the 16th. century?
