So please reply if you read this prior to 10 AM on Monday the 25th (sorry this is a late post). I need to work tomorrow morning, but my wife will take the train up and meet me. We are planning to go to Super Dawg for lunch. My question is does anybody know much about the forest preserves right near Super Dawg (Milwaukee, Devon, Nagle area)? Worth detecting?
Thanks!
Jon

Sounds like Bunker Hill down from St. Andrews home in Niles. Old toboggan slide on the west side of it, many old slab foundations back in the woods along the west side of the river there. Got all my silver and old cent coins there along the river's edge on the high east bank, just south of the large picnic groves.

I haven't hit the place yet, but it's definitely on my list. It's an old park and though it might be a little trashy, I'm sure there's still a few keepers in between the trash.
Good luck and let us know how you did.
Mike

If it's Bunker Hill, here's a couple views, with notes on where I found the easiest pickings for oldies.

Great response, Tim!

Jon, I never hunted that specific area, but have spent a lot of time in other groves that one would think have been picked clean by now. There are finds still left out there for the patient hunter. Look at all the great stuff that's been posted here on Illinois. Much of it came out of the woods. Funny thing, though - sometimes I'll go out there all day long and get a relic and maybe a newer coin or two - nothing old. Then one day, out pops a great oldie or two! You just never know. Go slow be patient and good luck! I hope you have a fun hunt!

Thanks Lowbatts, mikewaz and kimsdad!

I did stop at this forest preserve (I think where I parked SW corner is called Caldwell woods). I only spent 90 minutes there since my wife was with me and I sensed it was time to go. No keepers. Found 36 cents modern and a lot of trash. Some days are just like that, but had a good time and saw some ducks.

Yeah, not too sharp on the area myself, foggy memories of barrel parties nearby and burning cars....

But I've hunted down to the edge of Caldwell, it's the next one south from Bunker Hill, should be some keepers there as well of course, simply couldn't tell you where. How were them skeeters?

I like them with garlic, though they don't like me with garlic. I may have gotten bitten once, but I saw several flying around.
