i have a question that may be silly, but i purchased 3 morgan dollars recently and i put all of them airtight coin holders.1 of them has tarnished and the other two look the same as when i put them.my question is, is the one that has tarnished been cleaned or dipped in tarn-x or some other silver cleaner? just wondering, thanks for your help.hh

Hard to be sure but that is one very good possibility- some of the things people dip coins in can have devestating effects on the patina after hours, days, or years.

here are some pictures one of them is a peace dollar (my mistake) they both looked similar when i put them in the holder.thanks for your help.hh

So the coins looked about the same when you put them into holders....how long ago did you put them in the holders?...were they loose when you bought them?...just asking to get a better "picture" on the whole story...personally, I have no idea.....like I said..I'll be interested in hearing what others have to say...

i bought them from different people on ebay about 3 months ago.they both looked similar as far as the color of them.they both came in cardboard dollar holders.i put them in the holders at the same time.it just seems that the morgan dollar turned brown pretty fast.iit could be the other way around.the peace dollar has been cleaned, and the morgan was in the cardboard holder and when i transfered it, it caused it to tarnish.jeff

That is a huge color difference for 3 months worth of time, something had to have happened. My GUESS is that somebody dipped the morgan before selling it on ebay but that's impossible to prove.

If they are sitting on foam (looks like it from the pic) , gases from the foam can cause discoloration. You are best to keep in mylar holders or flips.
