Question about our hobby

I have not seen any data but, i have seen 5 out in the wild over the past 40 years.

Interesting question. 😮 My personal estimate would be about 100,000. But I base that on what I consider to be "serious" detectorists...those that get out at least 50x a year and have been doing so for at least three years or more. Just my opinion. 😁

They are like fly's here in VA.
Once the sun comes out, they're everywhere.

In My area, I have maybe 5 or 6. Most are weekend diggers. One is a hit and run guy. Have to go behind him covering holes plus he cost us a great place to hunt. Can only hope he will take up Bingo.

I've run into about 10 in my 5 years of detecting. The all want to know what you've found at that spot and your overall finds. Most are very nice, but some are pompous and arrogant. Many of them want to get together and detect with you, but never at THEIR honey hole!

I hunt alone for a reason. Way too hard to find great spots. No way am I sharing it with you (and the 5 buddies you'll bring back the next day). Anything I find is mine, all mine! Greed is good! LOL!

Too many in the great state of Connecticut.

I avoid certain towns now because of the excessive number of detectorists in those towns. I never find much in those towns anyway because they've hit every school, ballfield and public spot to death. I head for the boonies and go deep into the woods, where lesser detectorists fear to tread! LOL!

Too many as far as I am concerned...

But for detector companies... I am sure... not enough.
