Looks sorta like a hat badge, but would greatly help to know what state/area it was found in.
 

Coney Island, Brooklyn NY!!! But it is really does not mean anything, found much more different items (age, origin ETC)!!! Old item can be next to a newer one on the beach!!! Thanks for you answer!!!! Mummytrol!! Maybe you have any info about Coney Island during the Civil War??????
 

Great find. Ebay has a page on constable badges that are similar shapes, but there are so many. What metal type is yours?
 

Looks like a hat pin to me too? or maybe horse leather decoration?
