Just like in business its location, location, location - MDing its research, research, research. Gotta go where people have been to find the good stuff. Talk to locals, find out about the area at the library or do an internet search on the history of that area. Or, you could just get permission and start swinging. Some of the best stuff found has been just because somebody decided it looked like a good place to search. Good Luck!
