Question about Doubled dies.

Okay from what I have learned so far about doubled dies is when it comes to the devices and enlargement.

As I understand it, devices that are square will present notches.
Devices that are rounded have split serifs.


Is that always the case ?
Can square devices have splits at the corners vs notches ?

I hope someone responds, because no one seems to have asked that before because I can't find anything about it.

I have some that have splits where there should be notches, but I am thinking die deterioration is at play.

In a nutshell, yes. It depends on the class of doubling as well as the strength of that doubling.

(But we don't see notching or splits on class 6 doubled dies unless there is more than one class of doubling involved.)

You're probably familiar with Wexlers site Doubleddies.com. It has some good information escribing the different classes.
