Interesting concept.

Yes, give it a try

try it out before you spend time in the feild. buy some gravel/sand from a hardware store or a home supply center to run in this sluice or a couple of buckets of river run material. and decide for yourself if itll work for you! the rounded edges might cause problems with scouring!

I was thinking the same thing when I looked at the cross section.

Do you guys think this belt would be okay to make a small back packable sluice. I am only going to use it for quick sampling. Thanks.

Only one way to know for sure......
Plus almost anything will work with proper classification angle and flow, even a flat board will work under the proper conditions.

GG~

Since they are not to wide,I would glue 4 strips, length wise on a board, but stagger the rifles(ridges) so they split each other in half.Maybe make more turbulence.I would try them even, and then staggered.
As suggested already,nice concept.

Not related but my belt gets a lil bigger every year...

For your question do a home test before lugging it around in the wilderness.
You'll see if it works at all, what kind of water speed you need, what your losses are using it, etc.
It's a lot more convenient and time efficient to learn stuff at home then out in the bush.
It would kinda suck to waste 1/2 a day shoveling material into the sampler just to find out at the end of the day you made a nice blonde sand collector :)

I was chuckling at Sick4Gold's comment when my mind flipped to some of Astrobouncers work. I do not think he's posted in awhile.

But if you can cut a slot in two boards so the belt will go into the slot with a bit of room left over and hold the boards at a set distance apart, you could slip the belt into the slots and bingo you'd have a removable riffle sluice box. Have fun and let your mind slide out side of the box with all sorts of ideas about this project that will lead to an adventure..........................63bkpkr

it's what use in a poop tube, great concept, even attach thin 3/8" or 1/2" flat alum to create a little riffle about every four inchs, screen material
have fun
building is all part of the exprience, experiment gold is forgiving to an extent
