question--1858 flying eagle cent---counter marked with "25" on it --whos mark?

any idea s? sadly it seems to be a common mark (say up the value to "25 cents" if used at ? store or place of biz) to me---- just wonder if anyone knows or has a similar coin and knows of any certain person or groups that use this "mark"---no name just "25" on the eagle side other than that its a normal "small" letter syle 1858 flying eagle cent that looks very good indeed---dang if its a common unidible mark --I really wish they had not done it ---since its otherwize in great shape---as a common "counter marked" coin most likely it worth $10 to $20 bucks ( the "25" drops its $40 plain value---however if I can id whos "chop" it is -- it could maybe go back up in value some what---Ivan

Is it really worn ? I have heard stores would turn old worn coins into tokens due to wear.

nah this one is in really nice shape---oddly if its a common "25" counter stamp that can not be "matched up" with who made it --it actually drops its value to 10 to 20 bucks---in the shape its in (VF 20) it would be worth $40 bucks "unmarked"---so I am hoping to find a possible match for the "mark" maker which could help "restore" some of its "lost" value ---Ivan

"faking" knowledge is just not my style---that might be the way lots of e bay type hucksters do it---but I just don't approve of it ---and most likely, I'm going to keep the coin for my personal collection anyway---just wondering "who's" mark it is for cataloging purposes--- Ivan

It was a 'dig/joke' at ebay not a suggestion I would advocate. I'm not sure your every know. As you say if you could pin it down it would be worth 5 times more.

sad really but being its a unknown markers "25" stamped on it it drops the value---to $10 to $20 ---rather than the $40 it would normally bring in it current shape if "unmarked" at all---however if I had a "fair" idea of the "possible marker" was ---the value could easily go to $80 or more-- historical things are rather odd that way --- Ivan

Makes perfect sence to me. Personally even though its dropped its value it MORE interesting marked (as long as its a old mark).

I actually like it---think its cool -- being "yankee money" I wonder if was "counter marked" by the south during the civil war for use as southern money?---now that would be very cool indeed---oh it staying in the collection anyway--- flying eagles are rather rare and its one of my "older coins" Ivan

Just a off-the-wall thought:

Change the numbers to letters

B E - Could this mean anything?

I doubt any store would stamp a coin to increase it's value. Anyone with a stamp could clean up by duplicating them.

My guess would be it was marked as a token in a give-away or promotion. Like for kids digging coins in the sand at a company picnic (Finding the "25" getting you the contents of bag #25 full of candy, say, or 25 gum drops). Or, for a store (i.e. "if you recieve a marked coin in your change you could be a winner": 25% off, 25¢ credit, etc.)

Or, someone needed a test piece to make sure his new "25" stamp was working.

I'm thinking 25 cents credit if $1 or more was spent at ? store---or 25 % off---or bag of "goodies" number #25 in a give away type contest----wondering about stuff like this is like an "itch" that needs scratching ---bothersome till take care of---Ivan
