Second day on a new farm i have permission on, i was jumping around like a lunatic when i found this....farmer was well chuffed to...

Mint date is approx 1554

I have to take it to the finds officer to be recorded and weighed, measured and stuff

Sorry my photos are poor and do the coin no justice at all

:hello:

Welcome to Treasure Net :notworthy:

That's a nice Mary Groat :o they usually are a very poor coin, condition wise, yours is one of the best I have seen :o I have had 3 Mary Groats none were as good as yours :icon_thumleft:
By the way, you don't have to take it to be recorded :P but if that's what you want to do that's fine, you can record your Hammered coins and Artifacts here if you wish :icon_thumleft:

Can I suggest you post this coin in Todays finds :icon_thumleft:

Hi fellow UKer :hello:

:hello2: Much better than they normally come out, as SS points out :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Keep searching that area, although I normally find if you have a great start like that, you may have just hit the best thing in the field :o

Thanks guys.....yes i was well suprised at the condition...
I have searched that same area again and found a muskett ball about 20 feet away....
May have been a bad day for our noble, wandering along for a stroll :laughing9:

I am only taking it to her (FLO) because she begged me to lol......

or skilled craftman/merchant

I guess the FLO is short of work, mine failed to record any of my finds after 5 months of waiting (gave up asking), shame they let the side down.

that is awesome! congratulations

Maybe just lazy?
Mine is realy busy but said because of the condition and where i found it she wants to record it....

I cant stop looking at the damn thing lol.....the farmer is a realy realy nice chap aswell and has said i can keep it and stuff.....
would any of you offer the farmer anything?
i mean i know i found it but its his land....
I know its not hugely valuable and believe me i am not selling it anyways....but not sure how to go about it with the farmer.....
Ive had to show his mum who is housebound and she loved it saying she has probaly walked over that coin a hundred times lol

Hmmm, this has gotten me thinking now...
The find is only a few miles away (as the crow flys) from a large site that the romans started to mine tin and lead from..
And i keep finding quite shiny small knobbly lumps of metal from the coin area....i just put the lumps down to the farmer burning stuff there....
Ive got so much i need to learn about the evidence i see before me lol.....

Might I suggest that when you have enough finds from his land, you put a nice framed display together for him, I have done this several times and the land owners really appreciate them, I also give them a nice bottle of something to celebrate the new year with

Good suggestion.

You may know this already but 1 happy farmer means several. They all talk & you soon get a good (or bad) reputation. If good then much more land will fall in your lap.
I'm lucky at this stage that I can give many of my items (generally works out as about 25%, NB. Reported Treasure is always 50/50) to the farmers because I have already found 2 or more of them in the past. All farmers are different & have different approaches, some we give money to others let us keep everything (although I help in others ways like hay cut or general farm work).
I agree with SS that when you have enough to sacrifice you should give him something for his kindness. It will not only make you feel good but will pay off in the long run. I never hide anything & those are the words I live by, Gold coin or button, they see it all (unless they state otherwise).
