I tried to pick at it with a knife it seems to be just as hard as the surrounding quartz. Thanks for looking.

Thanks, I didn't think it was gold :( I have never come across this before. I just wonder if it would look cool cut and faceted? Thanks again for all your help.

I had a big marble made of rutilated quartz. It had lots of small gold colored needles running almost the diameter of it. Really fun to look at.

I think it looks like citrine.

"CITRINE:
Citrine is found pale yellow to a madeira orange in all of its glorious golden and yellow colors. The yellow color is from the presence of iron, the darker the color - the higher the grade. SiO2 Citrine is transparent, coarse-grained variety of the silica mineral quartz. Citrine is a semiprecious gem that is valued for its yellow to brownish color and its resemblance to the rarer topaz. Natural citrine is rare compared to amethyst or smoky quartz, both of which are often heated to turn their natural color into that of citrine."

I was a little leary when you said the other material was hairy.
but then you mention it is as hard as the crystal itself.

I've seen yellow hairy or furry like rocks that look like you could peel them apart
I was told it was asbestos....

Yup , I agree, looks rutilated to me. Gold would not be straight in quartz, but granulated and eradict.
After looking around a little I will have to agree..rutilated.

The last picture on your post shows that sample as very fibrous, and that looks alot like actinolit,(form of asbestos),. It can be green or yellow,, we have alot of serpentine here where i live and also some quartz with the same actionolite fibers in it, and it makes the quartz polish into a cats eye sheen, looks beautiful. Actionolite is also a source for asbestos. I like making cabs with it but I worry about the asbestos dust, so i keep it real wet. Here is a link to actinolite http://www.galleries.com/minerals/silicate/actinoli/actinoli.htm

Rutile forms as slender acicular crystals in quartz(rutilated quartz) The color is reddish brown, red, yellow,or black, and there is a pale brown to yellowish streak. This mineral sometimes forms as thin needles, as inclusions("cat's eye" and "star" asterism) in quartz , and corundum, and also in other transparent host minerals.
