So this is a tough one. From a saltwater beach it seems worn thin and has a thick patina I'm afraid to clean off.
At first I thought it was a quarter, but it is just slightly bigger. There is indistinguishable lettering around the edge.
Then I thought it might be an old coin like a reale but it doesn't have that black silver corrosion to it. Its more greenish.
Then I thought maybe a large cent....
Any thoughts?

What beach? It could also be a modern foreign coin. Lots of other metals used, and it could have crapped out in he surf... you might have to f it up just to ID it. good luck with it..

Atlantic Ocean on the east coast. I think cleaning it might remove what little detail there is.

Sort of looks like an Irish reverse... so maybe something like a 1720s Woods Hibernia, or Kyan and Camac halfpenny.

Leave it like it is. Then it can be whatever you want it to be.

Haha -true!

IronPatch - I think you may be onto something. I'll have to examine it with some of those Hibernia pictures and see if I can match up some lettering.
Its thin, which reminds me of an old Brasil Reis I found last year.

Well, after much examination, magnification, and image manipulation I've really come to no firm conclusions. I am pretty convinced it is a colonial copper of some sort but haven't ruled out much. Vermont and Mass coppers are still a possibility even, though I think there is too much lettering for those. It probably is a Hibernia of some sort but I'll wait and revisit it another time. Thanks for all the feedback.

No matter what it is it's very old and a great find. Congratulations.

Update: I appreciate all the help offered to help point me in the right direction, and I'm pleased to say that it has been figured out.
Under the right lighting I have been able to determine the bust was facing left, and the "GEORGIVS" somewhat easy to read.
On the back I have been able to make out the seated Britania with a fairly clear spear beeing held.
So, it is a George II British Halfpenny. No date can be read but its in the 1749 era I guess. Worth nothing at this point but very cool to have.

From your description almost certainly a George II halfpenny of 1730-54. May not have much monetary value in the shape its in, but you do know one thing for sure--- it came over to Colonial America and circulated there. Which is why it's a great find with a lot of history attached to it.
