This was very toasted in the ground. Not sure why, but the outer layer of this quarter sized coin was worn down to a coppery finish on the back side (not shown) and smooth while the pictured side has some of the letters for "United" left, and that's it for markings. Oh, and a divet in the middle -but its not a hole. Only thing is, where the lettering is seems to not be exactly where "united" is on a quarter.
Think its still a quarter?

Wow, what great responses - never thought I'd give up on it being a coin but button it is..
It is from an area that could produce colonial finds, but I have no idea of the age, really.
Guess the silver wore off mine, but here is another T'net picture of a similarly sized one.

The reverse side is relatively smooth and copper colored now that the thin silver has rubbed off from my cleaning if with baking soda. The divet in the middle is metal and doesn't go all the way through. Will put a picture up in near future.

It's a button and like many it's marked as treble gilt. You can also find them marked triple gilt or double gilt.

It says "plated"... the pen point is pointing at the D in plated. A treble gilt button would have been gold colored. This button was silver plated at one point. (you said the silver rubbed off while you were cleaning it) You're definitely in the right place if you're digging those up.

Yeah it was that same grey/black slop I get when cleaning a silver coin with baking soda. Took the thin plating right off in no time.
It's the right spot I guess - just depends on how much poison ivy I want to risk wading through!
