There is a treasure legend associated with the death of Jeremiah Herndon on 12 December 1874. He died after an altercation with his servant Jessie Fouks. The servant took $235 and was caught and hanged when he tried to spend it. Google "Jeremiah Herndon" Fairview for more info. The location of Fairview is given as 2.9 miles on County Road 608, although the point of origin isn't clear. It's probably starting from US 1. As Herndon was a miser, there is a fair chance there was more than $235 to be had. The big problem is that the old house / cellar hole is either on the Quantico Marine Base or in the Prince William Forest Park. My chances of digging are exactly nil, but i suspect a man with the right uniform would be welcome. More geographical references: Herndon Cemetery is also known as Bridwell Family Cemetery #1. But it was probably moved to clear an artillery range. The location is also given as "five miles below Brentsville." A good book to read is "Prince William the Story of its People and its Places. It's in the county library there. Mr. O'Rear (no typo) was the next door neighbor. His land was south of Cedar Run between Goose Run and Dorrel's Run. Good luck and happy hunting!

NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS: If you can find the old cellar hole, this would be a good class project for people learning to operate mine detectors. Get some real-world experience instead of the usual dummy targets.
