Its the 8th C Saxon Strapend.(A rare find) The thin zoomorphic end shows a beast head with ears, eyes & snout, the centre panel has a kind of ziz-zag pattern & its missing a few mm's at the thick end where the 2 rivets held it to the leather strap. :icon_thumright:
Dad will correct me if wrong, but I pretty sure this is the first one of this type he has ever found :headbang: (I've had 4-5 examples)

Saxon strapends are quite rare as you say: l've only found one example. l would love to find one in silver: that is one on my wish list.

Thanks for the info Cru. I could see a lot of decoration on this piece and knew it had to be something of importance! :notworthy:

That's a productive hunt...I would have thought that ring was older!

So did we in the field, thought it maybe another treasure item & laughed to ourselves, but the hallmark is clearly 1904.
