My son and I searched some dirt piles that someone dug at the river, I suppose, and found these pieces of fools gold. The hook shaped ones are a mystery. They are solid pyrite. Usually, you can find these on the Neuse River in certain places. Thanks for looking.

hi gilligan, did you try to see if a magnet is atracted to those j shaped ones.

Nope, the magnet did not stick, and when you look at the broken ends, it is just solid pyrite, no core of metal

Maybe the hook like things are related to filled in cavities where Pyrite filled "empty" spaces in the rock.

Good point, perhaps they were bug holes, I never thought of that
