i bought this at a garage sale. is it glass or amethyst??

What did they tell you it was at the Garage sale?

If you hold a light up to it... like a flashlight... and use a magnifying glass...
Look for bubbles...
If so... glass...
IF it is free of any inclusions and really clear... Glass

Agree with others, appears to be glass.

I feel fairly certain its glass country girl. In the second and last pictures the top of the piece shows a swirl and matte finish that is the original exterior of the piece. Amethyst, a quartz crystal, wont have that characteristic. Much of the fracturing also suggests glass rather than quartz due to its rounding.

Amethyst can run from crude, crusty, and full of inclusions to the pure, defect free gem grade.

I can't tell if there is a slight yellow/orange look blended in your piece, or if it is a reflection from the light.
If you see a little orangishness in that piece, I'd tilt the meter a little bit more towards it being amethyst.

It looks very similar to large pieces of purple glass we found on the beach. This has been tumbled for 80 years or so with a patent date of 1909. The natural tumbling makes it milky.



We traced it to a lens company that makes prisms.

This is exactly why it is glass and not mineral. Nice little piece though. I love slag glass. This is my favorite cullet-
