I would like to hear some user opinions regarding the use of a Waterproof PI Detector (Pulse) Detector verses a VLF Detector for Beach Hunting. Which kind do you prefer and Why ? I know that Garrett, Tesoro, Fisher and White's have these waterproof detectors that you can use on the dry sand and in the surf. Which kind do you use and prefer ?

I dont do any water hunting but I've read that the Minelab Excaliber is an excellent waterproof detector and is very effective on dry land. From what I understand it has the same electronics as the Minelab Sovereign.
With my SE and WOT coil I do REAL WELL on Delaware wet or dry sand.

PI is the best for any type of hunting, but the only problem is that it isn't the best at discrimination. The new White's PI Detector uses Eric Foster's PI Technology. Foster is the big daddy of Pulse Induction. We don't hear a lot about Foster Detectors because they are hand made and very low production.

Here is a link to the only US Distributor of Foster Detectors that I know of:

VLF has great discrimination capability.

I have a Minelab Excalibur 1000 and a heavily modded SD2000 PI Gold Machine. If the Pulse Devil ever comes out, it may well revolutionize the MD Industry (it has been on the brink of coming out for the last three or four years). Dave Emery, the inventor of the Pulse devil, has claimed to have received the first twenty production pieces in April this year. It is supposed to have true discrimination.

Hello coinfinder, I hunt Delaware beachs and on occasion do alittle inland coin hunting. I have owned and tried pretty much most of the machines out for the last 20 years. The machines I have kept and or always come back to are the Soveriegn XS2 (modified) with a 12" coil and Headhunter PI for the beach. I also have had all the Explorer models.I kept the original Explorer XS for coin hunting and occasional use at the beach. I dont go in the water, typically hunt the wet sand @ low tide and always on a full moon .These machine work the best for me for what my application is.Good hunting to you....

Coinhunter, I use both on the beach ( Whites DFX and Surfmaster PI Pro). The DFX is excellent in wet or dry sand and I don't dig as much junk but The Surfmaster PI Pro finds everything out there and deeper. The PI does not discriminate at all but being 100% waterproof I don't worry about getting it wet either as I do with a $1000+ VLF detector. With a PI be prepared to dig a lot of sinkers and hairpins >:( but also a lot of earrings and rings ;D
