How much chance of finding something big is there at one of these places? The mere fact that they're in the business selling opportunities for tourists to dig on their land, rather than digging themselves, makes me wonder.

Chances are your going to take that chance.. However, typically those that you do find have already been picked through.. meaning the opals have been blown out of the mine, brought to the surface and simply dozer into/on top the field.. (seeded fields) so your chances of finding one are good.. finding one that is perfect.. is very hard.
