I know of all the reading I've done here on Tnet I have at some point read about folks who provide a service metal detecting. Like finding that wedding ring that grandma lost in the garden in 1960 kind of thing. Anyone here provide such a service? I ran an add yesterday in our city newspaper that will run for a week. I am not interested in making money doing it although most tell me to charge a fee. What do you think is a fair price to charge for such a service? My thinking is that it will open doors for more areas to search. I can only think that if you find someones precious ring or anything of sentimental value that person would be more than willing to allow you to search more of their property. Thoughts? Cheers & Merry Christmas Shane

Hey buddy,I've told the insurance companies that if they want me to look for something lost,if I don't find it there is no charge,if I do find it,my fee is 10% of insured value.Other than the insurance companies,I play it by ear. Some little ol' ladies I couldn't charge them and if it's some nice little sweet thing, well,I just don't know. Needless to say,I don't make any money at this.

Years asgo my hunting buddy had cards made up and ran several ads in the news paper. He had a form that stated what he was hunting for and he charged 10% if he found the object if not he got 25 bucks for gas and 1hour of hunting. It got to be a big pain in the butt and he stoped after he find a 2000 buck ring and the man called the cops instead of paying. Just get the deal in writing. I think I would charge 50 bucks if the hunt was with in 25 miles of my house for the first hour and 25 for any after that plus 10% if the object is found.

! CHEERS ! :coffee2:

allowing you to search more of their property,
Giving you a Good lead and/or by getting you on somone elses
Property.

Maybe gas Depending on Milage Considering how Outrageous Gas Prices are.

Are the types of Things I would consider.

I would be more than happy to search for their lost item with the understanding that anything else found I keep.

Great replies folks. My wife chewed me out and said I shouldnt charge anything unless I find the item. And shes not even a detectorist......she feels it would hurt "our" reputation as detectorist, hurt our hobby. I am OK with not charging unless I find. My add reads: Jewelry & Ring Recovery
You Lost* I find* Small Fee
Metal Detector Spec.

I thank you for input and hope I will receive more resposes. Cheers, shane

Shane , Greetings ! I really think the service should be free - because these folks have already lost

something , and if you did find the lost item, they would be only too happy to allow you to hunt other

property they own and they would tell all their friends . Just my opinion- Argentium.

Yes thats exactly what I'm thinking........like I said it's not about the money to me. I have a ring I found at a ball park and I would love nothing more in the world to see how happy the person would be if I could return it to them. Unfortunately I have no way of finding that one out. But to find somehting for someone that knows where they lost it......I would be thrilled just to find it for them. We shall see what happens.

I ran an ad in the paper about a year and a half ago. I got no responses whatsoever. I have responded to craig's list ads in the lost and found section. I'm heading out tomorrow to try and find a ring, as a matter of fact.
I don't charge a fee, but if someone wants to cover the fuel cost to get there, I won't argue.

Good luck with your ad.

I'd do it for free, if you do it for free your going to make a lot of new friends that could lead you to some good sites and you never know what occupation these people are in, maybe someday they could return the favor.

I was contacted by someone to find a lost ring. Drove about 20 miles. Asked the lady where she lost the ring.Front yard. Five minutes later I have the ring. She asks what I charge. My reply, nothing, but if you want to give me a few bucks for gas I will take it. The check for $50 will buy a lot of gas.

Returning items of sentimental value = no charge.
The happiness it brings to the owner = priceless.

I have a job and do not try to make a living off the hobby. If I can help someone find an item that is lost, I will donate a few hours of my time. If they offer me a reward, I will accept it, IF I find the item. Have looked and not found lost items and refused $$$ offered for my efforts. That is just me.
