Detector(s) used
Makro Simplex+
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
These items were farm finds today. My first decent buckle (2-1/2” x 1-1/2”) sorry forgot to add something to scale size by. The next 2 items are non-ferrous. I’d guess the middle pc is a zipper pull, brass or copper. The heart is 2 pc construction. The halves are held together by tabs that are bent over the edges. No markings on either pc. The heart was nearly 9” under ground. The Simplex showed it as a deep target. I removed the grass and the pinpointer hit a signal. The zipper pull was at 8” and same thing. I believe this pinpointer claims up to 4”. I’m guessing the buckle is from harness leather, due to being found where a lot of hardness parts were found previously. Nice to finally find non-ferrous other than aluminum.

How cheap of a pinpointer are we talking? Got some garbage ones on Amazon that didn't even work 2 inches from the target.

Ya got lucky then. Glad it works for you. Ended up getting my Garrett fixed after I bought another one. Now I have 2 carrots.

Nice job!

I didn’t know if I really needed one when I got this unit. Now I can’t image not having one. I’ll probably buy a different one eventually.

Ah so you never had one before. Man I made it 6 months in the hobby without one when I started. I won't detect without one. Makes recovery of a target so much faster. Garrett AT pro pointer is very good. Durable too. Only reason it went bad is because I wore a hole in the tip and flooded it. I've dug thousands and thousands of holes. Had that first one for 5 years.

Not sure how long they’ve been around. When I started, 1970, I hadn’t heard of such a thing. Mine saves soooo much time. I can’t imagine not having one now.

I have to respectfully disagree. A pinpointer might have it's place if its tiny holes/plugs in grass your digging. To prevent your knife hitting a nice coin or finding what edge its on, but in no way is it 'quicker' in a ploughed field. When you learn what the machine is telling you, you dig out the right amount of soil, spread it with the foot & grab the find in the first hand grab. I would have put the target in my pouch before you have even got the pinpointer out. I would have 2 or 3 targets in my pouch by the time you get off your knees. Should be beep 30 seconds or less in the pouch. If you think you can do this day with a pinpointer, your wrong;
So its NOT faster if you train to be fast.

I bought one of those "cheap" pinpointers for $20 on ebay, and I love it. I actually wanted one that only beeps when it's an inch or so from a small target like a dime or button. I want to know when I'm really close to nailing it with the shovel, especially in a deep hole where I've already gotten aggravated with tree roots or rocks. The pinpointer is indispensible when hunting in wooded areas and dealing with small targets like bullets that are hard to see in the dirt & roots. It encourages me to keep going when I'm onto something really deep and the detector is losing the signal as dirt gets removed.

I can't believe I detected since the 1990s and never had a pinpointer until last year. I think I was good enough at pinpointing with my old White's Spectrum XLT that I got away without one. I now use a Simplex like the OP for its greater depth, and I find it much harder to pinpoint targets with the large DD coil that I prefer.

I’m digging a lot of hits at 6 to 10 inches in a grove with a lot of roots. I’m not ever in an open field. I’d love to see a 30 second recovery from 8” depth with wrist-size tree roots above the target. And I don’t cut large roots, killing my trees isn’t the goal. I’m sure I’ll improve with experience. Until then I’ll probably use training wheels (pinpointer).

My carrot needed fixed twice, replaced and still does not work correctly. Quality control is slipping. 😡

Sure every field or situation is different & needs different approaches.
