Hello all! I'm wanting to take a trip out to Colorado from St. Louis, Missouri this summer. I'm still new to gold prospecting. I've only panned for gold one other time on a short trip in Arizona. I didn't find much, but had blast looking. Anyway, are there any good public locations for prospecting near the Denver area? I prefer locations that are more secluded without crowds of people since I'll be hauling my camper trailer. It would be great if I could camp where I look for gold. I only have the basics- pan, classifier, and sluice. I'd be coming from I-70. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi mduncan and welcome to tnet...and soon to Colorado. If you click on my pic in this post, it will take you to my profile. Scroll to the bottom and click the link to see all my posts. Scroll thru and you'll find really detailed info on a number of locations in metro Denver. A few are very close to I-70! I don't know much about where you can stay but would like to know more so I can help folks like you so please share what you learn as you do more research :)

Happy to answer questions too. Just post em in this thread and I'll see them. I'm on tnet at least twice every day...

Kev posts many pubic spots. You shoud follow my trail. I went to colorado last year like you, right off the plane i hit clear creek above tunnel 1. Fine gold in every pan. Theres gold in the dirt in the puloffs. Its fine but plentiful. From there i went to leadville and granite. Hit the arkansas river and the dry gulch at cache. Out there its much coarser gold, again in every bucket. Hit the well known spots if its your first time. Practice panning out #12 birdshot.

For more info on the free public prospecting areas on the Arkansas River and at Cache Creek, go here: http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/rgfo/minerals/locatable_minerals/placer_mining.html down at the bottom of this page you will see links to info on both areas. Hit the Cache Creek link and the Popular Placer Areas link. Much of the Arkansas River outside the public prospecting areas is claimed up so please don't just stop wherever you think it looks good to pan along the river.

Here's a nice picture story about another spot in that same area. It's pay to play but really cheap and very popular with the CO prospecting clubs. There's also camping near by for your rig. http://www.billandlindaprospecting.com/dennisOneil.html if you google Dennis Oneil gold prospecting you'll find more info about that spot too.

PS Griz is right, he hit some good high points. I would add the Arapahoe Prospecting Park to his itinerary at the least tho...maybe another spot in town of the several I've posted about.
