Here lately I've been sluicing and panning in about a 50'-100' radius around some of the bridges around here and have been having pretty good luck. I'll have to post some pics of what I'm typing about and the gold when I go back to one in paticular with fresh batteries in my camera.
My reckoning on this is that the ones I've been to, all the pillars or bases of the bridge are always on bedrock. They basically do the digging for ya. On other spots in these creeks I can shovel 3 ft. down and not hit bedrock, solid or false. 3 to 4 feet down by 2 to 3 ft. wide don't sound like much but it's some work with just a shovel. The make up is gravels and cobbles etc.
Anyway the material they dig up stays in the area, they useally pile it along the banks of the bridge, and alot washes just a little ways down the creek. Just thought I'd share this little tip I learned.
Good luck.
Disclaimer: Don't know the legality of this but I'm doing it anyway.
