News and Media Release:
The Coastal Historic Undersea Management Society, AKA {CHUMS} a Florida Not-for-profit Corporation
may soon be developing a Coastal Resource Learning Center in the City of Jupiter. The Community Redevelopment
Association is reviewing proposals made by CHUMS and three others under an RFP the town put out last month.
Actual presentations will be made to the CRA on the 19th of November, 2009 starting at 6:30 pm in the Jupiter Town
Council chambers.
What is unique and applicable to this posting is that one of the coastal cultural resources featured
in the CHUMS proposal will be Historic Shipwreck Sites.
The Town recently purchased and improved just under an acre of water front property on a switchback of the
original Jupiter Riverfront just a stones throw from Jupiter Inlet. It is located in what is going to be the geographic
center of what is to become known as The Jupiter Inlet Village.
CHUMS proposal surrounds a center piece that will be a re-creation of a turn-of-the-19th Century Boater
and Waterfront Tropical Railway Depot. CHUMS is proposing to move and restore a genuine local railway
station Henry Flagler commissioned to be built in the area 106 years ago. A Baldwin Type 4-4-0 narrow gage
locomotive, tender and passenger car - similar to the original Celestial Railway is also being sought to be a
part of the static display. The building will be used as CHUMS corporate offices, a learning center and steering
station; so as to direct visitors to other museum facilities within the community while educating them about
coastal resource issues including historic shipwreck sites within the general area and along the treasure coast.
A boaters supply station and controlled barbecuing and picnicking area along the water front is also a part of
the developmental concept. Here too occasional craft and artisans shows will periodically be held. Bicycle racks
and some off street parking will be available. A unique facet of this property will be that public dockage is
being provided along its complete water front - truly making pedestrian and boater friendly facility. This particular
location is right next to the new and successful tropical Guanabanas Waterfront Restuarnat - who is also making
a proposal to enlarge its site.
CHUMS - while a not-for-profit institution, will not allow itself to be dictated to by the archeological community
who demand artifacts and historic items may not be owned and appreciated in the private sector. It is CHUMS
goal to act as a pragmatic bridging corporation that can address the natural public interest in the very concept
of treasure - as Jupiter marks the beginning of the treasure coast, while educating them in an entertaining
environment that will be conducive to informal learning.
