I meet up with Goio and McEtrac at the spot, It was a little cold but we went straight to the site of an old football field. Well within in about 20 min it started flurrying a little, no big deal we just kept on going. Then shortly after I started noticing old plugs all over the place so I started to shift my direction a little. Then it started to snow harder. :tard:

I dug 4 coins today (2 dimes & 2 quarters) and I thought they were all going to be silver. First I got a great loud dime signal that read 6 inches. I dug my plug and nothing, so I scanned the plug and sure enough it was there. Well I used my pinpointer to find it, it was only 2 inches deep. Then the samething happened again. Then I found a deep quarter at 8 inches, dug my plug and it turned out to be about 4 inches. Then the same thing happened again.... :icon_scratch: I asked Goio to check the depth on a target so I could compare it to my machine. Just as I figured, my depth meter was off by 2 to 4 inches. He suggested that I check the coil connection to see if it was loose, nope it was tight. So I guess I have to send my SE in to have it checked out. :'(

Well by 11am we were all soaked and cold so we called it quits.... This was my very un-glorious end to my season...
I always have my Ace 250 to fall back on if we have another nice day. :tongue3:

That's too bad bud. I know your SE was giving you problems the other day. It still finds
coins though, so I'd hold off till you're sure the seasons over.

You never know. I remember perch fishing at Belmont harbor in a tee shirt one Christmas.

Come on global warming! :icon_sunny:

It's always a long, sad drive home when you don't find something worthwhile. . . I'm still hoping
for a few more hunts before we're all buried by snow.

Keep the faith!

Try different head phones .

My SE acted weird too.
It was like the head phones were drawing juice out of the machine and making it go crazy in all different ways.

Different headphones solved all the problems.

Its not time to give up yet, still a few good days in Dec. If you are still finding coins keep going till the sub 0.......
Under the leaves in the woods will stay soft for a while.

Don't send it in till ---Y o u K n o w The weather will be too bad to hunt,,,,,,,,,,,,,say mid Jan ? Then even if you don't get it back till the begining -to mid March.......You still haven't missed any hunt time...As 4 me..................I beleive I will give it a rest till Snow Off in March.....That is unless (like bilt46 suggests)we have an INDIANa Summer in December... :icon_sunny:. ..LOL
I don't know if you had a chance to check your P.P. depth meter against your hunting depth meter....But by the time we discused that,we were all pretty soaked....I just wanted to be the last DieHard hunter to give in..........L.O.L.
1/2 hour before you guys suggested giving up (Thank You ! )...I W A S concerned about my detector getting wet >:(......................Then 10 min before we quit....I turned my threshold up (endure the pain :o) and found my only 2 (Non deep nail) targets.....got home ,and they were a (very nasty)
1910 & 1931 wheat cents......Not worth more than face value probably....But I learned a little in just that last 10 minuites..........It wasn't a waste of time...........LOL...........................I enjoyed it !
We'll give it another go round in 2009 TF OK ? :icon_jokercolor:

Oh yea - next year I'm gonna get in as many hunts as I can!!! I'm also gonna buy a Sunray pinpointer, a good set of headphones, and I'm thinking of getting a 5 inch DD coil. I'm gonna give it more time with the SE before I think about trading up for an Etrac though. :tongue3:

Hey TF...............about the 5" coil

It is a fine coil........i ordered one when I ordered my ET ,and I found a couple wheaties at 5 &6",and a rosie at 4"+ in an insane trashy area.......But........................I think 4 U....a more versitile coil might be the 8" DD They are both round disk shaped w/out a hole in the coil to snag on vines ,roots ,and underbrush.........They also get about the same depth, but the 8" has more coverage for the F.preserves and tall grass..........I think 5" is better 4 getting close to iron posts and such in the tot lots, and fences.
I may be selling my 5 soon to go larger, just so I can hunt the woods faster next year....The pro coil is great but w/the holes......It snags on about everything.......Let me know if you want a 5".....I'll give a good deal to you,or if not you ...Someone on Ebay LOL..........

Before you order up a Sunray. Consider the PistolPROBE by DetectorPRO. I was watching some videos on it today and it's awexome! 6" on a nickel, and accurate too. Some auctions on ebay were less than the X-1 and it will keep your swinging weight down. When I get the E-TRAC, I'm definitely getting the PistolPROBE... now more flipping switches and forgetting to switch it back, just have to press a momentary button to turn it on. Even though it doesn't have discrimination, if I open up an 8" plug to find iron... I'm removing it from the ground. Who knows... maybe I'll find a silver right under it after I do.

About your depth meter being off, try to take your coil cover off and clean it all out first. Maybe it was getting water/dirt logged and throwing it off... maybe it was something else. I personally have thought my depth was off as well many many times in the past, but the last few weeks it's been working great. I know that on my machine, if the depth meter is bouncing from 5 to 6" it's probably not even 4". It's gotta be like 25% black for it to really be 8" or more. Somewhere around the middle just seems to be inaccurate. Also, in my front yard I can't detect a quarter laying on the ground from more than 3" up, but I can air test it at like 15". Same quarter at a park nearby can go deep. That's not depth meter related, but still goes to show it's not always broken at first glance. Oh, charge up your battery good and try the factory reset first as well.

You may have only come away with 70cents, but that's more than I got today! Congrats on braving the elements and making the best of a crappy day!

I have the 6" Excelerator coil and I love the depth, 8" on a dime with good tone. It obviously will drive you nuts at how little ground you are covering unless you are in high trash. 5" doesn't go nearly as deep I've read, Dave might be able to validate that. 8" might be a better compromise, but then you will null out more in high trash. The 4.5 x 7" is the same deal... can null out more.

Today I was looking at some Ratphone Max's vs. Gray Ghost Ultimate... still trying to figure this out! Yep, I'm writing out my xmas list!

Maybe we can see if Ron can get us a deal on buying a few of those pistol probes? I'd be game come spring, even with my lowly Ace 250 ..the time consuming part is finding the damn coin. I got the $40 pin pointer deal at Kelly co but you need to find the coin before it makes any noise....not a whole lot of good for my needs.

I'll ask him!

UPDATE: Email sent asking about multiple PistolPROBES, E-TRACs and Ratphones Max. PM me if you are interested to see what the price will be for 1, 2, 5, and 10. Obviously the more people that are in need, the lower the price you will end up with. We could work something out where I pick up everything and we meet at some hunt site and distribute presents early... of course I'd need cash-in-hand ;) We'll see how it goes.

Go with the 6" Excelerator... not to small...very lightweight....dead on pinpointing and fantastic depth!

If we can get out hunting again one last time this year, I'll let you try out my 6" Excelerator. If Dave is there, you could compare it to the 5".

Yeah Fiend, I remember that problem in Wing Park with you. Wet ground is a buzzkill for the depth reading on your rig. But hey, it still finds the goods! Good luck on however you resolve the issue.
