Hello folks,

I currently own a Minelab Quattro. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while now, and my time here in the Big Sandbox has afforded me the opportunity to do so. Well since my time over here, the dryer broke, the truck needs a new suspension, and other various things need attention. Now the wife wants a brand new front loading washer and dryer set!! This of course will eat into my MD fund for an Etrac. Having said that, I have succumbed to the fact that an upgrade to my Quattro in the way of a Pro coil is the best and cheapest solution. Yes, I do realize the Quattro has not been a favorite of most Minelab users, but it has served me well over the past few years. I would like to know your opinions on whether the Pro coil would be worth my while as an upgrade for this particular detector. I was in contact with Windy City detectors in reference to the Etrac, and I must say the price is right...I would even have money left over to get an X-1 probe and still come out ahead. But, please, any and all opinons would be greatly appreciated.

I will keep that in mind, thanks.

I leave here in late Aug, so it would be around Oct timeframe until I could purchase it. Still pricing washers and dryers!!

You might want to look for at a good used Explorer II or SE ... the E-Track dont really detect any deeper ... IMHO ... ::) ...
All your coils would be interchangable with the Quatro ... Which BTW makes an outstanding beach detector even with its stock coil.
It dont take many of those gold shinny things you find at the beach to add up to a new detector.

I bought a procoil for my Quattro. It took some getting used to after the slimline, but when it's on there I'm pulling deepies!!

It does a better at target seperation than the slimline.

I will confess I hated it when I first tried to use it. I thought there was something wrong with it. It is nearly useless in heavy trash areas. My problem was that I was hearing and seeing crappe that I hadn't seen before.
So, I took it to an area I had pounded lots of old silver and indians with my 5" coil.

Within minutes I had two barber quarters that I had been over several times with both the other coils. The procoil nailed them and left no question in my mind they were silver quarters before I even started to dig.

Good Luck,
Mark

Thanks for all the great opinions. I really would like to get an Etrac, but if it comes down to it, I will be getting just the Pro Coil. Besides, its been a year since I have detected. That reminds me, thank you T-Net and all its memebers for getting me through this past year over here in the great Sandbox. It wil be good to see green grass, instead of rocks and sand!

If your Quattro has the slimline coil ok, but don't bother upgrading if you have the old style coil unless you need something lighter.

My Quattro does have the original coil. So why would you say its not worth it? Lightness aside, it seems it would provide some advantage over the original.

No, it definitely offers nothing extra, if anything maybe less. I've been using nothing but the explorer and stock coil since shortly after the detector was released and if the pro coil was better I'd have two of them, and not two of the heavier stock coils... and trust me, I don't prefer a heavier detector. I've seen a bunch of comments how good the pro coil is but pretty much all are from new users who most of weren't even around for the old stock coil. The Pro coil of course is a decent coil, just not my first choice because I use what I think is best regardless of what it is.

Again, unless your coil has a problem or the weight gets on you put that money towards the new detector fund or something else. There has always been super hype when Minelab releases something... heck people were saying how good the SE with the slimline coil was! At least until enough started talking about the noise then popular opinion seemed to sway.

Ok, point well taken. Well maybe after purchasing the washer and dryer the wife has been harping about, I may just put it toward an ETrac or used Explorer. Or maybe even a Safari...same as the Quattro, which I am used to.

Hi all.

This is a very interesting post, as I was thinking of the pro coil for my Quattro too.

I have the standard FBS 10,5" coil, which is just a bit heavy but the unit works well for me on the beach. Very stable on the salt wet sand, even with the sens at 20.

It sometimes hit on targets with a broken signal and a jumpy ID, when this happens, there is always a DEEP target (12"+coin-sized) to be found.

I think I will also save some $$ to get an Explorer, I am very curious about the disc capacities/possibilities.

Then I will have a pro coil to try on the quattro... ;D ;D

I am thinking the ProCoil will eliminate that broken signal/jumpy ID. But yes, the idea of having an Explorer with the ProCoil, would be a bonus in any case.

As I said, I added a procoil to my Quattro this spring.
It took a bit getting used to, but has been worth every penny.

I've been over ground that I hunted with my original coil many times. I've found many coins that I would have thought I'd have been able to find with the other coil.

In my humble opinion the procoil on the Quattro is downright deadly compared to the original.

Ask yourselves why the new Safari comes with the procoil. Because it works better.

Good Luck,
Mark

If you had the old stock 10.5" coil the only way that could be possible is if it was damaged and not working properly... or of course not the exact same conditions. I've been using the older coil since 2000 and I can guarantee the pro coil offers nothing extra. (unless you include confidence or imagination) If it did I would have paid over $200 only to sell it a short time later and stick to what I was using.

I believe that the Quattro's came with the 10.5 slimline coil. The procoil is a big step up from that particular coil.

That does seem to be the case.
