I managed to get from top to bottom in another privy yesterday, and was able to sift three or four feet of it before running out of time. I managed to collect another set of bottles and a marble; the bottles have been soaking in a bleach solution for a day, which is why I'm posting now. In addition to the "3" series of bottles, I added a small bottle from McCormick's (probably an extract), an A&P Extract bottle, a Pennsy Select (beer or soda?) bottle and Lydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I'm also curious about the little tube and, for lack of a better description, the nipple shaped piece. Any help from the bottle experts would be appreciated! I only have to finish emptying the pit, scan the dirt with the detector and start the process of filling it back in. I already have #6 in my sights!

Very cool stuff.

Re: Privy #5 bottle collection

And the little tube probably once had a bulb on top similar in style to an eye dropper. Very cool stuff!

Those cleaned up nicely, hard to beleive they were swimming in poo a hundred years ago. :o

Nice job Henry. Now take a break until I can make it back up there :laughing9:

Excellent bottles.

Question.... How often do you finds coins in those holes? And what kind of shape do the pennies come out if you find any? I would think the acid in the soil would hurt them alot.

So far, we've found two wheat pennies and they've been very corrupted; I don't think we got a date off either one.

I have to find time to at least fill in the 8 foot hole in the ground I have up there right now. I'm itchin' to start another one, but I'll try to be patient! The last three have all been concrete; I have my eyes on a brick one next.

Great digs halfdime,
That privy digging looks like it could be awful habit forming.I been thinking about doing some of that myself in the spring.
Best of luck ,
Jim

Next Monday will be the next time I can head up there. Were you able to spot some more holes in the brush, or are you still working around the ones we have already dug? And just think... we haven't even hit this place with our metal detectors yet!
