If you're just starting out or haven't tried private yards yet, you've got to try it out. If your neighborhood is 45 or more years old there's tons of history waiting for the coil to sweep over it. I'm finding wheat pennies and silver dimes and even half dollars among other lost valuable or personal items. You will always find something, and when you do it makes you want to go out and do it all the time! This spring I may be knocking on doors just to ask if I can check the yards all around my neighborhood.

Anyone else find lots of good stuff in private yards? Besides historical sites it's got to be one of the best places to search.

private yards are an awesome spot to hunt! most of them have never been hunted, unlike the parks and the schools. i think your chances of finding silver is way better in private yards, the trick is getting the permission.

I agree it is a great place to find lots of old coins if you look at the right ones. Also one neat part of it is when you are out there lots of times the other neighbors will come over to see what you are up to and they just mite want you to come by and check their yard out too.

My house was built in 1940. It is also within 250 yards of the town hall and municipal building which was built in 1907.....I think I am going to find some goodies in this town. I need to figure out who to ask permission about the small ornamental park and vacant lot next to the muni building....

I asked permission to hunt an elderly woman's back yard yesterday and pulled up 33 pennies, 3 quarters, 2 dimes and a small brass bell made in India that looks quite old..7 of the pennies were wheaties..if you're digging up wheaties you know it's just a matter of time before the silver shows up..I gonna ask permission to hunt as many of these older yards as I can when the weather breaks.

Outdoorgirl, dog tags are neat to find and are unique pieces of history..I have a few but the one you found is older than any of mine..one of mine reads "Rabies Vaccinated 1962" and another reads "Expires 7-1-70". Your neighborhood sounds as old as mine so you should try other yards there if you get a chance.

Here in northern California we had about 300 abandoned military housing units adjacent to an old Air Force Base.
I hunted the front and back yards for months. Total take was 180 silver coins, over 1,000 wheat pennies. Lots of jewlery, toys, ect. Old houses are great!
